Leather Cushions
April 18, 2010Leather cushions are great for people who want to add more style and
uniqueness to their homes or gardens. Unlike other types of cushions,
leather cushions give a more luxury feel and they can last longer with
proper maintenance. Actually, it is not really accurate to call them
leather cushions as only the cushion covers are made of leather. The
rest of the cushion are actually made of foam that are used to give the
cushions their shape.
How to buy leather cushions
When buying them, there are a couple of things you should look out
for. First, look for water proof leather cushions covers. These covers
will save you some grief if there is spillage on your cushions. If
there is no protection, you will spend some time trying to get the
stains out. I will talk about how to clean your leather cushions later
but my point here is if you have some form of protection, the amount of
cleaning up will be much less.
You also need to consider the quality of the leather. Good quality
leather age nicely and the natural grains they developed will look
great over time. Poor quality leather on the other hand tends to crack
when they are old. You will see them flickering and peeling over time.
The best things is to check with the seller on what grade is the
leather. Usually, the higher the grade, the more you have to pay.
Finally, choose the colors that match your current furniture or home
decor. Most of the leather cushions are bought to complement the sofa
so I assume the colors of the cushions should match the color of the
sofa. For example, if you have a black leather sofa, you should buy
black leather cushions. If you are buying leather sofa cushion
replacement, then it is easier as you would have know what designs are
suited for your sofa setting.
How to decorate with leather cushions
Once you have purchased the cushions, it is time to place them for
decorations. The conventional way is to place them on sofas or chairs.
This approach is ok as long as you have matched the colors of the
leather cushions with the sofa or chairs. Another more usual approach
is to use the cushions as wall decorations. There was this restaurant
that I visited before. What it did was to create three rows of empty
spaces in the wall. The owner then stuffed the rows with at least 20 to
30 cushions, in sets of five with the same colors. This created a very
nice visual effect and caught the attention of most of the diners. You
can try thisapproach as well if you want to do something more adventurous with the cushions.
How to clean leather cushions
If you did not take precautions and someone dirtied your cushions by spilling drinks or oily food onto it, then you will need to deal with it asap or the stains might become permanent. This is how you should clean leather cushions if there is spillage. First, take a dry tissue and absorb as much of the wet stains as possible. Once this done, use a damp clothing with a mild leather shampoo to gently rub on the spillage area. Don’t use too much force or you will rub the stain more deeply into the cushions. Once the stains are removed, use a dry cloth to dry the leather. Don't use a dryer as the heat will too strong for the leather and damaged it.
